To adapt is to be able to adjust accordingly to a situation or an environment. The ability to adapt is one of the most useful skills someone can possess. Life is all about change, and how well you adapt to that change plays a huge role in your success as well as your mental health. Perhaps one of the most difficult situations to adapt to is starting a new job, but fear not. These seven tips will turn this challenging process into a piece of cake.
- Make friends. Obviously, this is easier said than done. However if you’re able to strike up a conversation with one or two people it will make your transition infinitely easier. Doing this will provide someone that you can approach with simple questions and may eventually lead to an outside of work friendship if that’s the direction you wish to take it.
- If you don’t know how to do something, ask. Nobody will hold it against you for asking questions; you’re better off asking than winging it and doing a task incorrectly, states HowStuffWorks. Asking questions not only shows that you’re looking to do work the correct way, but also that you have the confidence to admit that you are not perfect.
- Don’t be afraid to make a mistake. While it is important to ask questions if you do not understand something, it is never the end of the world to make an error. Failure should be treated as an opportunity to learn, says LinkedIn.
- Listen. According to Harvard Business Review, it can be enlightening to sit back and listen while people who have more experience within the company speak during meetings or about general work things.
- Seek out mentorship. Business Insider says that seeking out a mentor is perhaps the best way to get acclimated to your new work environment. Be sure to take notes if you’re the type of person that forgets things easily, as people will feel less inclined to help you out if they think you’re not taking it seriously.
- Embrace change. No two jobs are exactly the same, so clinging to an outdated method or strategy you used at your old job will end poorly. According to Jason Jennings, author of The Reinventors, to stay relevant as you move forward in life, you must embrace change.
- Give it time. Forbes states that if you start a new job and are experiencing immediate regret, you should wait a while before making any rash decisions. If you can, try to stick it out for six months, because more often than not people’s original concerns are alleviated after that time.
